Having completed “Wisdom Takes Work” by Ryan Holiday (Amazon), I want to highlight a take away that stood out.
Read.
Read what you agree with.
Read what challenges you.
Read what you don’t understand.
Read what you think you already know.
Because the moment you believe you have nothing left to learn, you’ve closed the door on wisdom.
When Zeno arrived in Athens after a shipwreck, he was broke and had lost everything. He wandered into a bookseller’s shop and discovered the writings of philosophers who had been dead for centuries. That was the secret the Oracle at Delphi had promised him: “You will become wise when you begin to have conversations with the dead.”
Books give us something remarkable. They let us borrow the lessons of lives we didn’t have to live.
So read something old.
Read something new.
Read someone you disagree with.
You don’t have to accept every idea.
Just be willing to hear it.
Stay curious.
Stay humble.
There’s still so much you don’t know.
